THE SHOW
PIGEONS is a musical fable created by writer, musician and artist Ashley Rebecca King. Inspired by comic books and the motley crew of feathered-friends who share her city, King created a musical fantasy weaving themes from New York City history with an original story featuring ghost-like guardians, charming tricksters, tenacious children and misguided adults. The original score utilizes rhythms and sounds influenced by pop, rock, jazz and traditional musical theater to create an eclectic sonic backdrop for a tall tale that explores how our responsibility to our community relates to and, at times, conflicts with our responsibility to ourselves. Never seen a baby pigeon? This, my friend, is why.
THE CREATOR
Not unlike her characters, Ashley Rebecca King has performed a myriad of jobs since moving to New York from her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA in 2001, like distributing Time Out magazines at South Street Seaport and posing for photos at the Metropolitan Museum dressed like a turtle. Though these adventures showed her a city of wonder and chaos, inspiring many of her stories, she’s most proud of her achievements in art, music, writing and theater. She’s the piano-pounding half of the comedy duo Portz & King and composes the musical score for their popular “Moon Pools” shows, which have been recommended by Time Out New York, the New York Times and the Village Voice. Her original musicals include “Ghost Bros” (Co-writer/Lyricist/Composer), “Sal Songs” (Writer/Lyricist/Composer) and the upcoming “The Ballad of One-Paw Dog” (Writer/Lyricist/Composer). Her creations have been performed at The Plaxall Gallery, Ripley-Grier Studios, the PIT and the Jerry Orbach Theater, and a scene from “Pigeons...” was chosen as part of “Scene It: New York.” An accomplished performer and visual artist, King is a volunteer with “Musicians on Call,” and was a recipient of the 2018 Queens Council on the Arts “Art Hotel” grant. She’s a mother and a proud resident of Queens, the greatest borough in the greatest city in the world.
